“At first Sheldon didn’t want it to be in North Carolina, he just wanted it to be somewhere in the South. So, we did have Mount Pilot which there’s a place called Pilot Mountain up near Mount Airy. But, I gradually started slipping in real towns in North Carolina like Asheville, and Raleigh and Siler City. And so it became, during that first year, it became a town in North Carolina,” said Griffith.

I didn’t get to eat at Snappy Lunch or get a haircut at Floyd’s City Barber Shop but they are there on Main Street if you want to stop in. Inside Wally’s, you’ll find lots of Andy Griffith collectibles and souvenirs. They have crafts, t-shirts, and old-fashioned snacks like Moon Pies and RC Cola too! After finishing up at the Mayberry Courthouse, go next door to another place fans of the show must visit. When I went below the museum, I found a beautiful mural of Mayberry which is definitely worth seeing! I’m not sure who the artist was, but they are amazingly talented! The photo exhibit and Betty Lynn exhibit were also below the museum as well.
